![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() FF has always been about reinventing the wheel, usually when it isn't necessary, and sometimes to the games' detriment. For the old folks like me, it feels like the SNES JRPG you played as a kid, but in the modern day. To me, it's still not a price I would usually pay for games, but DQXI is fantastic and it's also very very long so there's no question one would get their money's worth.įor those not familiar, DQ's whole schtick is basically "traditional JRPG" but executed marvelously. It's not the historical low but it's fairly close to it. If SE can cut down on the long-winded parts and focus on better level design while building upon the already great battle system and character design/development, part 2 will knock it out of the park.Įverybody is talking about FF7 Remake but I'd just like to shout out DQXI. Also, the new gameplay mechanics used in Yuffie's story arc also kind of hints at potential new team attacks between characters which should keep the battle system fresh. It sort of sets the table for what's to come, both crisis core remake (for those unfamiliar with Zack and his story) and remake parts 2 and 3. It does an amazing job at introducing the characters to newcomers unfamiliar with the story and also bringing life to how we imagined them when we played the original. The first part is sort of like a character introduction arc. You have to remember that the full game is being split into 3 parts. As an avid FF7 fan, it was really cool to hear banter between characters which would otherwise be missed if you had to do something more involved gameplay-wise. On the PS5 though, I could see them being annoying.Īs for the time-padding, I agree, the "dungeons" and story quests really dragged on for far too long at times and made you do repetitive boring tasks (my only gripe with the game) but I feel like this was purposely done to highlight the character interactions. I personally would rather have these transitions rather than staring at a loading screen. I think those slow parts were put in to mask loading times on the PS4 which worked really well, you rarely ran into a loading screen. In the original, each area is only a handful of screens and you don't really get to see the city above the plate, it's only mentioned in dialogue. The original had better pacing, no doubt, but I feel like the Remake did a better job at portraying how large in scale Midgar really is compared to the original.
